Engagement Metrics & Earnings
Engagement Metrics
Engagement is the measure of how users interact with your content on the platform. For publishers, engagement is calculated based on how many readers have either purchased your content or accessed it through a subscription plan. This is designed to encourage long-term interaction with your content rather than just one-time purchases.
At Knowvas, we’re committed to ensuring fair and transparent compensation for the creative efforts of our publishers. To achieve this, we have developed an engagement-based revenue model that rewards publishers not just for content sales, but also for how much their content is consumed by our users. Here’s an overview of how our engagement metrics work and how your earnings are calculated.
Engagement Metrics: Tracking Reader Interactions
Our platform goes beyond traditional "purchase and download" models by incorporating advanced engagement metrics that track how readers and listeners interact with your content. This allows us to measure user interaction in a way that reflects the true value your work provides. Key engagement metrics include:
- Pages Read: For ebooks, magazines, comics or newspapers, our system tracks the time users spend reading your content, ensuring that more engaged readers who spend more time with your content contribute more to your earnings.
- Listening Time: For audiobooks, the total time users spend listening to your content is recorded, ensuring that longer and highly-engaged listening sessions are accounted for.
- Completion Rate: We track how much of your content is completed by readers or listeners. This helps identify content that keeps users engaged throughout, which may increase your earnings.
- User Feedback: Reviews, ratings, and other user interactions are also considered as engagement metrics, though they do not directly impact earnings. They help improve the visibility of your content, leading to more engagement.
Publisher Earnings Calculation
We offer two primary revenue streams for publishers: Single or Direct Purchase Sales and Subscription Engagement. Here’s how earnings are calculated for both:
Single Purchase Sales
When a user purchases your content (ebook, audiobook, or other digital formats) as a one-time purchase, you earn a percentage of the net sales revenue.
- Net Sales Revenue is the price of the content after applicable taxes, fees, and platform costs are deducted.
- Your Earnings: Publishers receive 60% of the net sales revenue for each purchase of their content. For example, if your content is purchased for ₦2,500 and the net sales revenue is ₦2,062.5 after fees, you would earn ₦1,237.5 from that sale.
Note: Knowvas reserves the sole right to adjust the payout percentage without consultation with the creator or publisher.
Subscription Engagement
In our subscription model, earnings are based on user engagement, rewarding you for how much of your content is consumed by subscribers.
- Per-Read Payment: We pay publishers a set amount between ₦1 to ₦40 per read (or equivalent in USD), meaning you earn each time a reader engages with your content through the subscription plan. A “read” is counted when a user engages with a minimum threshold (e.g., 50% or more) of your content.
Adjustments & Flexibility
Knowvas retains the right to review and adjust the payout structure. As the platform grows, we may adjust the percentage payout for both single purchase and subscription models. These adjustments will always be communicated to creators or publishers, ensuring a fair and transparent process.
Reporting & Analytics
To ensure full transparency, we provide detailed analytics and reports on how your content is performing, including:
- Total Purchases: A breakdown of how many users have purchased your content.
- Pages Read / Listening Hours: Detailed insights on how many pages were read or how long audiobooks were listened to.
- Completion Rates: The percentage of users who completed your content.
- Earnings Breakdown: A clear report on your earnings, both from single purchases and subscription engagement.
Maximizing Your Earnings
To maximize your earnings on Knowvas, we recommend focusing on:
- Engaging Content: Content that captivates users and encourages longer reading or listening sessions will naturally earn more through our engagement-based model.
- Regular Updates: Releasing fresh content regularly helps to maintain user interest and engagement with your work.
- User Interaction: Encouraging readers to leave reviews and ratings can improve visibility and lead to higher engagement.
Free Books and Engagement
Free books generally do not contribute to engagement metrics or generate earnings for publishers. However, there is an exception for publishers who choose to include their free books in subscription plans during publishing.
Subscription-Based Free Books
If a publisher opts to offer a book for free as part of the subscription plan, engagement will be calculated for that free book. However, only users who are subscribed will have access to the free book under the subscription plan. This allows publishers to strategically include free content while still benefiting from user engagement. In such cases, the same engagement metric (₦1 to ₦40 per read) will apply to these free books within the subscription package.

Community Standards
Community Standards
Introduction
Knowvas is a secure, AI-powered digital publishing platform that empowers authors, publishers, and readers to connect through eBooks, audiobooks, comics, magazines, and more. To ensure a safe, creative, and professional community, we have established these Community Standards.
We will remove any content — including books, audiobooks, images, comments, or other uploads — that violates our Community Standards. In severe cases, we may suspend or permanently remove accounts.
Our rules apply to everyone and to all content on Knowvas. Enforcement is carried out through automated moderation, AI-powered tools, and human review.
In rare cases, exceptions may be made for works of educational, documentary, scientific, artistic, or newsworthy value.
Prohibited Content & Behavior
- Violent Extremism: We do not allow content that threatens, incites, or glorifies violence. Content promoting dangerous individuals or organizations is prohibited.
- Illegal Activities & Regulated Goods: Content promoting or enabling criminal activity (fraud, theft, human exploitation, counterfeiting) is not allowed. Instructions or trade of weapons, drugs, controlled substances, or counterfeit goods are prohibited. Depictions of criminal activity may be allowed only if clearly educational, artistic, or documentary.
- Frauds & Scams: We do not allow schemes or deceptive content intended to exploit users financially or personally. Solicitation of “investment,” “get-rich-quick,” or similar fraudulent offers is prohibited.
- Gambling: Content promoting gambling, betting, or casino-style services is not permitted.
- Privacy & Data Protection: Publishing personal data, personally identifiable information (PII), or confidential information is strictly prohibited.
- Violent & Graphic Content: Gratuitous depictions of gore, extreme violence, or sadistic content are not allowed.
- Suicide, Self-Harm, & Dangerous Acts: We do not allow content that promotes or glorifies suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, or unsafe practices.
- Hateful Behavior: Content must not attack or incite violence against individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected attributes. Hate speech, slurs, or hateful ideologies are not tolerated.
- Harassment & Bullying: Respectful expression of views is welcome, but degrading, humiliating, or harassing content is prohibited. Sexual harassment, intimidation, or unwanted advances in comments, messaging, or works will lead to removal.
- Adult Content & Exploitation: Explicit sexual content, pornography, and sexually exploitative material are not allowed. Depictions of non-consensual sexual acts, sextortion, or abuse will be reported to relevant authorities.
- Child Safety & Well-Being: Exploitation, abuse, or endangerment of minors is strictly prohibited. We report any child sexual abuse material (CSAM) to the relevant authorities.
Enforcement
Violations may result in removal of content, suspension, or permanent account bans. Repeated violations will lead to stricter actions. Knowvas reserves the right to notify legal authorities in cases of criminal activity.
Building Together
Knowvas is not just a platform but a movement to empower African creators and safeguard creativity. By following these standards, you contribute to a safe, inclusive, and piracy-free publishing ecosystem.
